Reader Review #2: 1st Gen Geo/Chevy/GMC Tracker or Suzuki Vitara/Sidekick or Pontiac Sunrunner

Before the SUV Craze and the explosion of small SUVs such as the Chevy Trax, Fiat 500x, Mini Countryman, and plenty more, there were SUVs that could actually go off-road. They could get dirty, get dented, be used. They didn’t have all the latest tech and safety features, they just worked.

This suggestion comes from a reader who calls himself Jones Superior Racing. He tells me that the highest level Tracker came with such luxuries as A/C, a better stereo system, rear wiper, washer jets, floor mats, and an alloy spare tire.

The first gen Tracker ran from 1989 to 1998 in two specific sub-generations which we will identify by their engine code. The first was the LS5, a Suzuki G Series engine. The 1.6L I4 made 80 hp and sent the Tracker to 60 in 13.8 seconds. The second sub gen is the L01, the same Suzuki G Series engine but with better tuning and more modern parts making 95 hp. This higher power but also larger weight made the 0-60 of the redesigned Tracker 13.5 seconds.

To dissect the styling would be the same as dissecting an atom, there isn’t much to identify. The plastic front fascia makes for a rugged look while the chrome optioned ones scream drug dealer. I think that the size of the tires is perfect compared to the body, making it look rugged without looking like a toy car. Overall, the simplicity of the design has so much character, my only problem is that for a car being passed off as a Chevy, it looks a bit too foreign. You might notice that this was rectified with the second generation.

There were a variety of layouts for the Tracker, the drivetrain, transmission, and seating layout could be changed for any lifestyle. The Tracker was offered with a 5-speed manual, a 3 speed automatic, or a 4-speed auto. You could also opt for a two-door or four-door layout. The two-door could have either a soft or hard top.

Ultimately, the Tracker in any of its layouts is a great alternative to the Jeep. If you can put up with the extreme lack of power, you should consider this car. The fuel economy is much better than any similar car and it has loads of character. The Tracker is a perfect fun-loving SUV and I would recommend it.
