The Grandpa of 2018 Cars: Nissan Frontier

We have seen that Nissan has finally decided to update the 14-year old Frontier design. I feel a little sad to see it go as it was introduced in 2004 just like me. Luckily, the new design makes it easy to forget the old one because it looks like a new car. Today, we won’t discuss the new one, or the first one. Today, we talk about the generation my heart has latched onto and will never let go of.

Currently, “new” versions of this generation start at about $19,000, reasonable pricing for a vehicle of this segment. Here’s where the problem is, this car isn’t worth a “reasonable” price. Look at the picture, it is not a 2018 car! What Nissan tried to do was take the thinking behind the original Beetle. The difference? Well, that should be quite obvious, the Beetle actually sold.

The thing is, the Frontier isn’t simple, it’s a modern car still. Just not modern enough. In 2011, it got a minor update, and when I say minor, I mean minor.  The Frontier became the pinnacle work truck.

The Frontier is so dated that the price should be 2/3 of what it is. It is painfully overpriced but for some reason, so full of character to me. The tech level is 2010 but the price level is 2018.

I am glad and disappointed in the redesign. It looks promising and I am sure that it will be a great truck for anyone looking for a basic workhorse. Interestingly, there is a Great-Grandpa of 2018 cars, which will be sticking around for 2019, it’s called the Chevy Express and has been around with the same overall look since 2003.
